Preparing Your Greenhouse for Fall Production: Tomatoes, Cucumbers & Lettuce

The transition from summer to fall is one of the most important periods in the greenhouse calendar. Done right, a well-planned fall changeover sets you up for strong yields through the cooler months. Here's a practical guide to preparing your greenhouse for fall production of tomatoes, cucumbers, and lettuce.
1. End-of-Crop Sanitation

- Remove all plant debris, root mats, and spent growing media completely
- Pressure wash all surfaces โ benches, gutters, glazing, and structural members
- Apply a broad-spectrum disinfectant (hydrogen peroxide or quaternary ammonium-based) to all surfaces
- Fumigate or fog if Botrytis, powdery mildew, or whitefly pressure was present in the previous crop
- Inspect and clean irrigation lines, emitters, and fertigation injectors
- Check and calibrate all sensors โ temperature, humidity, COโ, and EC/pH probes
2. Infrastructure & Equipment Checks
Fall production means shorter days, lower light, and heating demand. Address infrastructure before crops go in.
- Heating system โ service boilers, check pipe connections, bleed air from hot water systems, and test thermostats before first cold nights
- Glazing โ inspect for cracks, gaps, and condensation channels; seal any air infiltration points
- Shade screens โ retract or remove summer shade cloth to maximize light transmission for fall
- Supplemental lighting โ test HPS or LED fixtures, replace failed lamps, and confirm photoperiod controllers are programmed for fall DLI targets
- Ventilation โ shift from cooling-mode to humidity management mode; check ridge vent seals and side wall closures
3. Seeding & Transplant Schedules
Timing is everything in fall production. Work backwards from your target first-harvest date to set your seeding window.
Tomatoes
- Seed to transplant: 4โ5 weeks (grafted crops add 1โ2 weeks for healing)
- Transplant to first harvest: 10โ14 weeks depending on variety and light levels
- For a December harvest, target seeding in late August to early September

Cucumbers
- Seed to transplant: 10โ14 days
- Transplant to first harvest: 5โ7 weeks
- Cucumbers turn over quickly โ plan for 2โ3 crops through the fall/winter season
- Parthenocarpic (seedless) varieties are essential in enclosed greenhouse environments
Lettuce
- Seed to transplant (plug): 10โ14 days
- Transplant to harvest: 3โ5 weeks depending on variety and DLI
- Lettuce is the most flexible crop for fall โ stagger seedings every 1โ2 weeks for continuous harvest

4. Climate Targets by Crop
As outdoor temperatures drop, dial in your climate setpoints for each crop zone.

5. Variety Selection for Fall
Not all varieties perform equally under the lower light and shorter days of fall and winter. Prioritize varieties bred for:
- Low-light tolerance โ strong fruit set and color development under reduced DLI
