    What Is Tipburn?

    Tipburn is one of theย  common issues in hydroponic lettuce production. It appears as brown, necrotic edges on inner leaves โ€” particularly the youngest, most rapidly expanding leaves at the center of the head. In severe cases, tibrurn can make a lettuce head unsaleable

    Despite looking like a disease, tipburn is aย physiological disorder โ€” not caused by a pathogen. It cannot be treated with fungicides or pesticides. The root cause is a localized calcium deficiency in rapidly growing leaf tissue.

    Why Does Tipburn Happen?

    Calcium moves through plants via the transpiration stream โ€” it travels with water from roots to leaves through the xylem. The problem: inner lettuce leaves have very low transpiration rates. They are enclosed, humid, and receive little airflow. As a result, calcium delivery to these tissues is insufficient even when calcium levels in the nutrient solution are adequate.

    Tipburn isย  driven by environmental conditions that limit transpiration, not simply by low calcium in the water.

    Developmental factors include:

    • High humidity and stagnant air around the crop canopy
    • Rapid growth (high light, warm temperatures, high nitrogen)
    • Low vapor pressure deficit (VPD) โ€” when the air is nearly saturated, transpiration slows
    • Large head size โ€” inner leaves become increasingly enclosed as the head fills

    How to Prevent Tipburn

    1. Improve Airflow at the Canopy Level

    Horizontal airflow fans directed across the crop canopy increase transpiration in inner leaves, improving calcium delivery. Aim for gentle, consistent air movement โ€” not high-velocity airflow that causes physical damage or excessive drying.

    • Position fans to create horizontal airflow across rows, not just above the canopy
    • Increase fan speed during high-humidity periods (night, cloudy days)
    • Ensure adequate plant spacing โ€” overcrowding restricts airflow between heads

    2. Manage Vapor Pressure Deficit (VPD)

    VPD is the difference between the moisture content of saturated air and actual air moisture. Higher VPD drives more transpiration. Target a daytime VPD of 0.8โ€“1.2 kPa for lettuce production.

    • Reduce humidity by venting or dehumidifying, especially during the day
    • Avoid large temperature drops at night that cause condensation and high humidity
    • Monitor VPD โ€” not just temperature and humidity separately

    3. Optimize Calcium in the Nutrient Solution

    While airflow is the primary lever, adequate calcium in the nutrient solution is still essential. For hydroponic lettuce:

    • Target calcium at 150โ€“200 ppm in the nutrient solution
    • Maintain solution pH at 5.8โ€“6.2 โ€” calcium availability drops at higher pH
    • Avoid excessive potassium or ammonium, which compete with calcium uptake
    • If using RO water, ensure your nutrient formula fully replaces calcium (RO removes all minerals)

    4. Manage Growth Rate

    Rapid growth increases tipburn risk because calcium delivery cannot keep pace with cell expansion. During high-light, high-temperature periods:

    • Slightly reduce nitrogen concentration to moderate growth rate
    • Harvestย  earlier before heads become fully enclosed
    • Shading during peak summer light intensity

    5. Select Tipburn-Tolerant Varieties
