- Above 30ยฐC (86ยฐF): Pollen becomes non-viable; fruit set fails
- Below 10ยฐC (50ยฐF): Pollen release is inhibited
Humidity
- Optimal: 60โ80% RH
- <50%: Pollen desiccates and fails to adhere to the stigma
- >85%: Pollen clumps and doesn't release; increases disease pressure
Light

Fruit Set in High-Heat Conditions
High temperatures are the most common cause of fruit set failure in summer. Above 30ยฐC day / 20ยฐC night, pollen viability drops sharply and flower abortion increases. Above 35ยฐC, pollen tube germination fails almost entirely. Key management strategies:
- Ventilation and cooling: Maximize roof vents, side ventilation, and fans during peak heat (11amโ3pm). Evaporative cooling can reduce air temperature by 4โ8ยฐC.
- Shade cloth: External 30โ40% shade reduces radiant heat without significantly cutting PAR.
- Shift pollination timing: Pollinate 7amโ9am during heat waves, before temperatures peak.
- Increase irrigation frequency: More frequent, smaller irrigations maintain root zone moisture under heat stress.
- Reduce EC temporarily: Lower EC reduces osmotic stress; return to standard once temperatures normalize.
- Calcium and potassium: Heat increases risk of calcium deficiency (blossom end rot). Ensure adequate supply; consider foliar calcium during prolonged heat events.

Flower Abortion
