Controlling Powdery Mildew in Greenhouse Lettuce

Powdery mildew can be a challenge for greenhouse lettuce growers. The good news: with the right environmental controls and early intervention, it's highly manageable. What Is Powdery Mildew? Powdery mildew on lettuce is caused primarily by Golovinomyces cichoracearum (not to be confused with downy mildew, caused by Bremia lactucae, which is a separate and more extensively studied pathogen). It appears as white, talc-like powder on leaf surfaces and can spread rapidly under the right conditions, reducing marketable yield and shelf life. Why Greenhouse Lettuce Is Susceptible High humidity with low air circulation creates stagnant microclimates on leaf surfaces Temperature swings between day and night stress plants and lower natural resistance Dense planting reduces airflow between heads Recycled air in closed systems can concentrate spore loads over time Prevention: Your First Line of Defense Environmental Controls Maintain relative humidity between 50–70% — avoid sustained levels above 85% Target day temperatures of 65–72°F (18–22°C) and avoid wide diurnal swings Run horizontal airflow (HAF) fans continuously to break up leaf-level humidity pockets Ensure adequate spacing between transplants — don't sacrifice airflow for density Variety Selection Unlike downy mildew (Bremia lactucae), where formal race-based resistance ratings are well established, true powdery mildew resistance in lettuce varieties is not widely documented or standardized. Most commercial breeding programs have focused resistance efforts on Bremia, making variety selection a limited lever for powdery mildew control specifically. Intervention Options Biological Controls Bacillus subtilis-based products (e.g., Serenade, Cease) are effective as preventive and early-intervention sprays Trichoderma-based products can support overall plant health and suppress fungal pressure Approved Fungicides Potassium bicarbonate has been shown to disrupt spore germination and is safe for use on edible crops close to harvest Sulfur-based fungicides are effective but must be used carefully in enclosed environments — heat and poor ventilation can cause phytotoxicity Always check label requirements for greenhouse use, re-entry intervals, and pre-harvest intervals (PHI) Cultural Adjustments Temporarily increase ventilation and reduce humidity if an outbreak is detected Reduce irrigation frequency slightly to lower ambient humidity.
